From time to time we need a new challenge to spice up our workouts and boost our motivation.  We are now half way through the year, and whether you’re sticking to your New Year’s Resolution or you can’t even remember what your resolutions were, summer is a great time to reevaluate your goals.  FitClub is a one stop shop for any fitness challenge that you want to take on and if you need some help getting started, we have five ideas for your personal summer challenge.

  • Try something new. Whether it’s as exciting as learning to swim or as simple as taking a new group exercise class each week, FitClub’s variety can keep you busy all summer  without suffering any boredom.  This is a challenge you can start immediately just by peeking at the group exercise class schedule and finding the class that intrigues you.  Mixing up your workout is good for both your brain and your body because it keeps your muscles and mind guessing.

  • Eat fresh for an entire week. Can you go one week without processed food or takeout?  You might find that it’s easier than you think, especially in the summer. In the middle of the summer, it’s easy and cost effective to stock up on healthy produce at the grocery store or farmer’s market.  If you can stick with a fresh, healthy diet for just one week you might be so inspired by the way you feel that you want to extend the challenge!

  • Start a streak. When you do anything consistently it starts to become a habit and a natural part of your schedule.  You don’t have to think about when you’ll find time to brush your teeth, right? Exercise can be the same way if you start a consistent routine.  Can you exercise everyday for a week?  Giving yourself a short-term, achievable goal like starting an exercise streak might improve your motivation and make it easier to commit to making exercise a daily, healthy habit.

  • Start a log. Consistently tracking your food intake has been shown to facilitate weight loss. Whether you like an app on your phone or prefer a pen and paper, experimenting with a food journal or log might help you make better food choices throughout your day.

  • Sleep! It sounds too good to be true, but sleep is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle.  If you don’t consistently achieve between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night, you will struggle to reach your healthy goals. Your summer challenge might be simply to start a sleep ritual, wind down in a healthy way, or to rise and shine at the same time each morning.  If a busy summer social calendar is keeping you out too late, this might be the best challenge for your mind and body!
